Get Unstuck and Move Forward
I had the privilege of speaking to Brian Dixon on this “episode” of the Unstuck Book Club. Brian is co-founder of hope*writers, author of Start With Your People, and a career coach. I invited Brian to discuss Chapter 7 Creating a Path and Chapter 8 Overcoming Obstacles for the Unstuck Book Club.
As I re-watched the video (OMG y’all, I’m mortified by my quarantine hair!!!), I took pages of notes. Brian’s suggestions inspired me to get going again as I am in another season of being stuck as I transition from one project to another.
Here are some notes and quotes from the interview:
When I asked Brian to explain what he does, he replied that it is his mission to teach people how to make an impact and an income. He also described methods he uses to help people figure out where they are stuck and how to move forward to turn their dreams into reality.
I believe we all need to find out what we are good at and not be afraid to own it and say it out loud. We also need to understand what we have to offer has value and not shy away from making an income from it.
START WITH YOUR PEOPLE
Brian shared the message of his book, Start with your People. He discussed the importance of being invested in the people “right there next to you at the breakfast table” and how it can lead to dark places when you neglect them. He added, “The stakes of investing in the people in your life are monumental. It will last for generations.”
Brian shared ways social media can help you share your message and make an impact. He gave words of encouragement for people who are hesitant to get on social media and connect; he said, “If you’re hoping to make an impact on people, you have to go where they are.”
Like it or not, social media is where people are hanging out, especially now during a pandemic.
I shared the story of my friend, Gemma, who started a business in a town where she didn’t know anyone. By starting small, using word of mouth and social media, she progressed from baking out of her home kitchen to opening her brick and mortar bakery, Champagne Cakery.
Brian gave great examples of how to use social media to test ideas and get feedback. We also talked about algorithms and Brian advised listeners on how to make them work for you.
When I asked Brain about the most challenging obstacle his coaching clients encountered, without thinking twice, he responded, “lack of clarity.” He noted, “When you don’t know what you want, you’ll never get it.” He shared an exercise he uses for clients to help them figure out what they want.
Brian recommends taking one small action each day to move closer to your goals. He said, “No matter what the situation is, you can always do something about it today.” Brian noted, when working with his coaching clients, “It’s more inaction that I’ve seen that leads to lack of results than action.”
I asked Brian what to do when it seems like all the doors keep closing, and I LOVED his response, “You probably need to knock on more doors.”
When I asked Brian what to do if you feel like God is calling you in a different direction, “Do you quit knocking?” Brain advised looking to scripture, prayer, and Godly counsel before deciding to call it quits.
We discussed rewards that come from hard work. Brian referred to Proverbs 12:11 and Ecclesiastes 11:6 and shared a lot about the benefits of putting in the hard work. Here are three quotes from Brian that made me consider the results I am wanting and the level at which I am working toward them.
“Go get to work if you don’t have the results that you want.”
“It’s really W-O-R-K; that is the four-letter word that is preventing you from living out your dreams.”
“If you want to get unstuck, really amp up the pain, make it hurt more.”
Take home message: Start with your people, find what’s broken, work hard at fixing it (even when it’s uncomfortable), and keep knocking on doors.
There were so many useful nuggets of information in this interview. I think if you are feeling stuck, you will undoubtedly benefit from the topics we discuss.
